I've heard you're a great cook. What has sparked this love for food?
I have always loved the aspect of being at a table full of different dishes, passing them around, breaking bread with friends, family or close ones. Growing up, my mom and dad were terrible cooks, so I started cooking most of the stuff I ate. I started looking for recipes and buying cookbooks, and it came naturally to me to try things and follow recipes.
Name some of your favourite things about summer in Colombia?
Mmmm tough one. We do not have seasons as we are located around the equator, and I am not one who really loves summer, hahahaa, more of a cold, rainy weather type of person.
Some early memories that have shaped your music taste?
My mom was very much into pop and rock (Michael Jackson, Guns N Roses), and we were always able to play that music loud and dance to it at the house. Then in high school, I was more into video games, computers and started burning CDs of upcoming reggaeton hits to sell.
How do you wind down?
It has been quite hard for me to wind down in general.
I find myself absorbed in doing things, but lately, I have started to write a journal, and it has been of great help.
I can't remember who said this, but it was something like, once things are written down, they die.
Things inspiring your music/DJing outside the club?
Friends, I think that my relationships have always, for a major part of my life, been centred around music, and that has always been a force to discover new music, play different styles and learn from others. Also, the radio has been, as far as I remember, my most solid companion. I listen to the radio pretty much every day.
While managing a label and a club, what piques your interest in a producer, artist or a DJ?
I can't say there is something specific that piques my interest; it will always be something different, and how you feel at the time might have a different impact on what you are listening to.
Tell me about Cincuenta Cincuenta?
In the same spirit as Tralralrax, this was a project where a group of friends got together and opened a space in the city's industrial area, intending to build a communal, safe space for locals and the city, understanding the context and continuing to promote music and culture.
How did TraTraTrax come about?
I would say it was the bond among three friends who have a passion for music and wanted to showcase what Latin America is made of sonically.
How would you describe this Kaiku Mix you made?
I haven't recorded anything for a while (probably going back to 2023 when I did an impromptu b2b with D Florentino at NTS Manchester). Since then, I have come to peace with my old self (the one who started djing almost 20 years ago) and the one today. I wanted to show that in the mix: both worlds colliding, multiple channels going at once, jumping between genres and trying to keep the mood locked.
What is your favourite city in the world?
The one I've had the most fun in was Beijing during 2014-2015, so I would say that one.
What do you like most about DJing?
I really enjoy going into deep rabbit holes of music, to the point where I lose track of time.
You are from Medellín, Colombia. Tell me a memory of you and the neighbourhood you grew up in?
So, I grew up near the city on a farm, surrounded by animals (dogs, horses, cows), so there wasn't like a neighbourhood per se. I do remember my dad being very intense about us me and my siblings) learning how to ride a horse (I learned how to ride a horse before I could even speak› ‹attached is a picture of a very tiny version of me, riding a huge horse).
Some of your favourite artists that you would like to shout out?
Xavisphone is a recent discovery that caught my attention; his release on Modern Love is great; there is this Colombian band called Meridian Brothers, check them out, talented musicians capable of turning pretty much anything into a contemporary Cumbia. My favourite artist of all time is Ryuichi Sakamoto, rest in peace.
What kind of music have you been listening to lately?
I have recently been listening to more solo instruments, say for example a guitar or a piano. A couple of records I remember listening to recently are Dancing the Line by Ultan O'Brien, who plays the alto fiddle, and Diriaou by John Surman and Kristen Hoguès, where Surman plays the saxophone and bass clarinet, and Kristen plays the Celtic harp. As I write this, I am listening to Locust's Morning Light, such a wonderful record, full of life!
