Something specific people might not know about DJing?
When you are really locked in with the crowd, my mind does tricks! My vision widens to like 260 degrees, and time seems to stop. I’m fully there, and gone somewhere. It’s movie like! And it’s the best share the fun, the confusion, and the hype with the crowd.
What is the first thing you notice in music?
The atmosphere or ’tunnelma’.
How do you get through winter?
Candy, movies, candles, and sauna. Utilize swim halls, libraries, and there’s a cheap movie theater in Oodi, called Regina. And get a guided hobby for January and February, makes working out so much easier.
Favorite things about spring?
Flowers, the sun, and the smells. Seeing snow melt from the rooftops…
Any funny memories from Kaiku?
When the toilets got renovated to the ”spa area”, we would chill there and curse that the heat was getting away when the dancefloor door was opened.
When I played my first set in Kammari and Carlina Carpelan played before me. I wanted to record the whole thing and I was so nervous that I walked into the booth, raised the mixer up, both grounding wires get detached, I plug everything in, and say I’ll come back when my set starts. Carlina and I still joke about it… ”the nerve...”
What kind of music have you been listening to lately?
Maryanne Amacher, Eliane Radigue, Margaret Dygas and classical music from different eras. Dialog, L.B Dub Corp, and some Giegling releases have been on repeat. Also I bought this crazy Don’t Cha Remix compilation that’s way too catchy…
Some of your favorite artists that you would like to shout out?
My whole friend group here in Helsinki. All are very talented and visionary people, who enjoy being hard–working as well. So shoutout to all of you beautiful people, and the stars in Tallinn and new warm friends from Tbilisi.
Tell me something about you and the neighborhood you grew up in?
I lived next to the sea, and loved swimming, and still do. Nature was really present there. I love forests.
Things inspiring your music/DJing outside the club?
Friends, cooking, and other arts. Living and enjoying life is the most inspiring. It’s easy to forget that!
How do you wind down?
Cooking, reading, swimming, jogging, and meditating. I just started watching Game of Thrones for the first time. I really like to read. I’m currently reading Diane Seuss, and Donna Haraway
Some early memories that have shaped your music taste?
Toto at Pori Jazz with my dad, when I was 10. I got upset that they did solos and didn’t adhere to the album versions of the songs hahaha. I think the virtuosity and larger than life feeling stuck with me. Also listening to Europe’s Live is Life from my cousins brand new MP3–player in 2003.
Dream event/party/venue to play?
I’d love to play in Fusion Festival; I appreciate the philosophy behind it. A reality that represents hefty values. Bassiani or Horoom. Eastern Europe in general. Club Are would be fun! Berghain can be fun…
What do you like most about your job as a DJ, producer, artist?
I get to love the little things in life. Cutting onions will inspire me for studio work. Drinking water at a different pace will spark an idea about mixing. It’s all poetic and spiritual to me, which gives life a lot of beauty.
Favorite city in the world?
Helsinki or Tblisi.
Best Kaiku sets?
The opening after Kaiku’s renovation. There was so much excitement in the air, and the whole city must’ve been there.
An all nighter that we played with Joshi & Denzel from last fall for sure. I also remember really well this hard trance/tekno set where I played the old and fast Planet Rhythm stuff with like psy-breaks, and X-Dream etc.
How would you describe this Kaiku Mix you made?
To me clubbing is a positive fantasy. A place to be queer, get wild, socialize, be sexy, and nasty in a not dumb way – so this mix makes space for that. Enjoy!
